In-Between -Solo Exhibition

  • Sun Life Building 1155 Rue Metcalfe Montréal, QC, H3B 2V6 Canada (map)

IN-BETWEEN is a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Lavi Picu, presenting nine paintings from her recent series. Rooted in lived experience, the exhibition explores sensations that resist language — nerve pain, cognitive fog, inflammation, and altered perception — realities most often associated with invisible and chronic illness.

Working through painting as a site of translation, Picu transforms internal neurological and sensory experiences into visual form. Rather than illustrating illness, the works function as material equivalents of what unfolds beneath the surface of the body. Layering, saturation, repetition, and tension become painterly strategies to express pain that migrates, intensifies, blurs, and resists resolution.

The paintings do not offer narrative clarity or symbolic comfort. Instead, they invite sustained attention. Surfaces appear dense, fluid, or unstable, echoing fluctuating states of perception and sensation. Color and gesture operate not as representation, but as evidence — traces of lived experience made visible through the act of painting.

Each work serves as a visual document, preserving a moment within an ongoing condition. Together, the nine paintings form a constellation rather than a linear narrative, reflecting the non-linear nature of invisible symptoms. The exhibition challenges the hierarchy of visibility that governs which experiences are recognized, believed, and given cultural space.

Organized by HelloArt and hosted by BGO Immobilier, Giving Form To The Unseen is presented at the Sun Life Building, located at 1155 Metcalfe Street, Montreal. The exhibition opens on December 18 and remains on view until March 18, 2028.

This exhibition speaks to curators and collectors interested in conceptual painting, art engagé, and practices that engage the politics of the body, perception, and lived experience.
